Methodology

How we score and rank products

Every score on this site comes from a formula, not an opinion. Here's the formula, the data behind it and how we keep it honest.

Our four rules

  • Data first

Scores come from public ratings, weighted by how many reviews stand behind them. We don't hand out scores.

  • Independent

Affiliate links never change a score or a ranking. Products without an affiliate deal rank the same way.

  • Checked by hand

Prices and deals are read from the vendor's own pricing page, with every source kept on file.

  • Kept fresh

We recheck prices regularly, and daily during the Black Friday window, Nov 20 to Dec 2.

The score, step by step

  1. 1

    Collect ratings

We gather each product's rating from up to six sources and convert them to the same 0 to 1 scale.

  2. 2

    Weight by evidence

Each source counts in proportion to its review count, on a log scale. A rating from 1,000 reviews counts fully, one from 10 reviews counts a third.

  3. 3

    Start from neutral

Every product starts at a neutral 7 out of 10, so a handful of reviews can't push it to the top or the bottom.

  4. 4

    Average and round

We take the weighted average of everything, scale it to 10 and round to one decimal.

SourceWeightWhat it measures
WordPress.org1.0Star ratings and active installs from the official plugin and theme directory.
G21.0Verified business-software reviews.
Trustpilot0.8Customer reviews of the vendor. Lower weight because they often cover support, not the product.
Capterra0.8Software reviews from verified users.
Reddit0.6What developers and site owners say in r/Wordpress and similar communities, read as positive, mixed or negative.
Our readersup to 1.2Star ratings left on our review pages. Their weight grows with each rating.

Products with no rating from any source show "Not rated yet" instead of a score. You can rate any product on its review page.

How we check deals

  • Codes are tested where we can

We list a code only when the vendor publishes it or we've seen it work at checkout. Expired codes are marked, not hidden.

  • Sale status is dated

Every Black Friday page shows its status and when we last checked it. "Not announced" means we looked and found nothing yet.

  • Corrections

Spotted a wrong price or a dead code? Tell us and we fix it, usually the same day.
